What is 360o feedback?

360o feedback is typically used as a leadership development tool, although occasionally it is part of an annual review / performance appraisal process. The underpinning concept is to provide participants with feedback (often anonymised) from a range of sources on how they are seen to perform in their role. The feedback is then collated into a report that can be used for a variety of purposes. Today, the best 360o feedback tools are online and fully automated.

Benefits of 360o Feedback

1. Increased self-awareness

Performance improvement has got to start with self-awareness – and often we are simply unaware of how others perceive us. A great 360o report can create real ‘Ah ha’ moments

2. A truly balanced view

We might already get the occasional word of ‘feedback’ from our manager, but how often do we get useful feedback from peers, our reports, stakeholders or clients? Their view of us is equally important! Only 360o feedback can provide this rounded view and help us develop improved strategies to work better with everybody.

3. Leveraging strengths

There is plenty of research that suggests that the best way to improve performance is to make the most of our existing strengths – but do we really know what these are? A great 360o report can allow us to identify 2 or 3 main strengths to turn into world-class behaviours!

4. Prioritising development

It’s impossible to work on everything, so where do we get the most benefit from our time and energy? A good starting point here is understanding the areas that your manager or the wider organisation most value in the work that you do – and from our experience there can often be a real disconnect here – with people unaware of what it is that their manager and colleagues need from them. A good 360o report will not only identify your strengths and blind spots, but also bring out the areas that your manager and colleagues see as the most important.

Why use a professional 360o system?

There is no shortage of cheap – or even free – software for surveys and tests.

So why would you use a professional 360o system? Here are our top 7 reasons!

1. A brilliant user experience

If a system isn’t slick, then people won’t use it. A good 360 system will ensure that feedback-givers feel comfortable providing sensitive feedback

2. Self v others perception

It’s vital to be able to clearly see how your self-assessment compares with how different groups of colleagues see you and a professional 360o system does this far better than any generic software

3. Scarce internal resources

It can be hugely time-consuming and expensive to try and bend standard software to meet your 360o needs – why reinvent the wheel?

4. Asking the right questions

Getting the questions right is vital – otherwise the feedback is not helpful.  A professional system, tailored by a 360o expert makes a real difference here

5. Confidentiality

Feedback needs to be anonymous and secure

6. Tracking progress

A good 360o system will automatically track feedback progress and send out reminders – which a generic survey system would struggle to do

7. Prioritising development areas

A professional 360o system can visually show the importance of a question or topic as well as the rating – allowing users to prioritise development

Question sets that work

Navigator 360 is designed for you to be able to create your own questions. However, with over 30 years’ experience in designing 360o surveys, we know just how time-consuming this can be! We have therefore made available a series of proven questions, organised into a series of ‘success drivers’ (competency headings). You can use them exactly as they are or use them as a starting point for a tailored version.

In many cases, they are based on proven leadership models, eg Kouzes and Posner or Daniel Goleman
Currently we have whole questionnaires ‘ready to go’ for the following job roles:

SENIOR LEADERS

MANAGEMENT

SALES LEADERS

SALES EXECUTIVES

PROJECT MANAGERS
